Four Bears On National Award Watch ListsOct. 6, 2010
A quartet of Baylor football players began the 2010 season on watch lists for national individual awards.
Even coming off an injury-shortened season, sophomore Robert Griffin III is up for three honors. He is one of 30 players on the Davey O'Brien Award watch list and one of 33 on the Manning Award watch list; both awards recognize the top quarterback in the nation. Griffin is also one of 60 student-athletes on the watch list for the Maxwell Award, presented annually to the best player in the nation.
Senior Jay Finley, too, was hampered by injuries last year, but that didn't stop him from earning a spot on the watch list for the Doak Walker Award, given each year for the past two decades to the nation's top running back. The Corsicana, Texas, native began the year ranked 18th all-time at Baylor in career rushing yards.
Junior Kendall Wright was among the 51 players on the preseason Fred Biletnikoff Award watch list; the honor goes to the top receiver in the country. After just two years at Baylor, Wright was already among the Bears' all-time leaders in career receptions (tied for eighth) and receiving yards (12th) entering 2010.
In late August, senior Danny Watkins was added to the watch list for the Rotary Lombardi Award, which recognizes the top lineman in college football. Watkins is one of only three Big 12 offensive linemen to make the list.
