Financial assistance

Financial Aid

Financial Aid is a critical component of your graduate education. To fully realize the graduate school experience, you should not be so financially strapped as to have to work full time while taking a full load of courses. We offer assistantships, grants and scholarships.

Additionally, you should take full advantage of federal loans while you are in graduate school. You will never find a better interest rate and payment begins after you graduate or stop attending. These loans can be used for just about anything including living expenses and equipment (computers, software, desk, etc.). At the rates you get and the repayment schedule, these loans may be a sound and valuable investment.

Financial Aid is offered through: Department graduate assistantships (in the form of tuition remissions and stipends); department scholarships; federal loans, grants and scholarships.

Applying for Departmental Aid

To apply for a departmental assistantship or scholarship, send a letter detailing your situation and need for the aid to the director of graduate studies. Clearly state why you should be given the requested financial aid.

DEADLINES: Departmental financial aid is awarded once a year and your letter must be received by March 1. Most departmental financial aid is awarded by April 15. The financial aid will cover the one, both or all of the summer, fall and spring semesters. Check with the director of graduate studies for information about available funds. Leftover funds will be allocated on a needs basis; those without any department funding will be considered first.

Graduate Assistantship Assignments

Students who are receiving financial aid in the form of tuition remission or stipend will be required to serve as graduate assistants for the department for up to 10 hours/week, depending on the award. Your assignment will come during the first week of the each semester. When you receive your assignment, contact the faculty member with whom you are assigned to discuss your responsibilities. We make an effort to match students with faculty in the students' areas of interest.
