We Are . . .
There is no application process to become a journalism major.
Unlike other universities, students can take journalism classes freshman year. While we do have a departmental exam, the professors prepare you in advance; you won't walk in unsure or unaware of what you will be tested over.
"At Baylor, I started taking Journalism classes my first semester without having to apply the Department of Journalism and wait to get in. I've always been impressed with the classes and professors." Katie Brooks, Senior PR
There are many student publications to work on around campus. The journalism department boasts our student newspaper–The Lariat, Focus Magazine, and our yearbook–The Roundup.
"Journalism is great because there's that feeling you get, which I'm still not quite recovered from, when you see your byline above a great article. You think, ‘I helped inform the world today.'" Erin Pedigo, Junior News-Editorial
We are one of seven accredited programs in Texas and 110 in the U.S.
"At first I didn't really understand the importance of an accredited program, but now I know that there are select schools that have accredited journalism degrees. It is only through these schools that I will be able to have a valuable degree; one that future employers will look at with respect. In combining this with the fact that Baylor is such a great school; I am where I want to be." Clarissa Nash, Senior PR
Student organizations bring in guest speakers who are prominent in their field, and at times famous. This provides connections for students, which could help in finding a job after college.
A motto to remember: Bears help each other out.
Off-campus study programs in L.A. and N.Y. provide students with some of the most fun and rewarding internships.
"One of the reasons that I decided to come to Baylor was the Baylor Communications in New York program. I really wanted to study in New York, but going away for four years seemed hard. With the program I experienced living in New York, I had a wonderful internship with a public relations agency, and I made incredible friends and memories." Megan McClane, Senior PR
Besides LA and NY, students can study abroad in Scotland, London, and Maastricht (to name only a few).
This small class allows each student to have their own desktop Mac to work on, with the newest Adobe programs, and best of all, personal attention from the professor.
"The journalism department does a fantastic job preparing us for the 'real world.' The professors set up mock-interviews, portfolio reviews, helped us develop our resumes and gave us plenty of advice on how to find jobs and internships. None of my friends in other departments received that kind of extensive preparation and always asked the journalism students for advice." Laura Barth, Class of 2007, Graduate Class of 2009
The students are passionate about their major and excited about their future.
"There is something unique about writing. It can be relaxing, informative and creative. There are no boundaries. As a journalism student, I feel a sense of importance. Writing is proactive. We, as college students, have the opportunity to shape the nation with our words. They are not meaningless, but have power--the power to touch others." Kimi Willingham, Senior News-Editorial

Once again, Bears help each other out.
Our alumni are great resources for jobs and job suggestions.
To prepare the students for their future career, professors encourage internships; some classes even require internships. The professors recognize the value of working while in school and want the students to begin thinking about the future while in the present.
"One of the greatest things about Baylor's Journalism Department is the hands on opportunity that it provides. By my junior year I already had three internships, two for public relations, and a news internship at the ESPN radio station in Waco. The experience of actually being in a news or press room is invaluable in the journalism world." DeAndre Upshaw, Junior PR
Castellaw was named after one of the Immortal Ten. Freshmen learn the story of the ten Baylor basketball teammates during their traditional homecoming "mass meeting."

Hayley Frank, Junior PR
