Master's Degrees

Baylor's Department of Journalism, Public Relations and New Media offers a Master of Arts and the unique Master of International Journalism degrees that combine relevant, stimulating courses with practical training to further prepare you for work in news-editorial, PR, photojournalism, foreign correspondence or international mass media settings, or to continue work toward a doctorate.

Master of Arts

The M.A. degree serves those who want to work in journalism, public relaitons and/or media arts or related professions, and for students who wish to pursue the Ph.D.

The M.A. is an academically focused degree requiring 36 hours, including three hours for a thesis or major project. A major project or thesis proposal must be approved before students begin work.

Students work with the graduate director to design a program that meets their goals.

Master of International Journalism

The M.I.J degree prepares graduates for careers in foreign correspondence or in international mass media and is an interdisciplinary degree. The M.I.J. is multidisciplinary in nature, requiring 30 semester hours of course work and a 6-hour internship abroad.

Students must complete an examination before starting the international internship and also demonstrate proficiency in a language other than their native one. Language instruction is available at Baylor. Most students study their chosen language further before demonstrating proficiency.

M.I.J. students have completed internships in Europe, South America, Canada, Asia and Africa with news, public relations, government and faith-based organizations.

Financial Aid

There are several paths of support. For some, department funding is appropriate and may include both tuition support and paid work. Others find similar support through other programs at Baylor. More information on financial aid is available from our graduate program director, Dr. Doug Ferdon.
