Richard Baggett and his wife, Miwes, began serving as a bivocational chaplain at Gateway RV Park in the Texas Rio Grande Valley in 2016. The year before, at age 70, Baggett had completed a two-year ministry certificate program at Baylor’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary. And with the couple’s 40-plus years of spare-time RV-ing — plus a pleasant year of living in the Valley more than 40 years ago — the opportunity seemed a perfect fit. For Baggett, “the certification worked out marvelously,” he said. “It gave me the credentials I needed. I didn’t have to go in debt to do it. And I didn’t have to mess with Greek and Hebrew.” “Being a chaplain is called ‘a ministry of presence,’” he said. “You’re there as much as you can – potluck, bingo, sitting and talking and mingling so they get to know you as a person, an RV-er instead of just as a chaplain.”

Come and explore the possibility of walking as a pilgrim and witness along an ancient pilgrim trail in May-June 2018. Dr. Stroope and a group of Truett students will join pilgrims from all over Europe, and those who have walked the Via Francigena since the 10th century, on a journey from Canterbury, England, through France, Switzerland, and Italy, to Rome. This three-hour credit class (Summer 1) will afford the opportunity to explore the ancient and modern traditions of pilgrimage, to visit primary sites of the medieval church, to give and receive witness to/from fellow pilgrims, and to seek God through prayer, walking, reflection, and conversation. Two information meetings will be held on Aug 30th and Sept 1st, both at 11:00am in room 236. Space is limited and selection is by application only.

His new hymn, "Peace of Our Praying” is a collection of individual phrases—snapshots—that together create a collage that can then be viewed as a whole. Dr. York works in conjunction with Dr. David Bolin who composes the musical tune to the lyrics Dr. York writes.

Dean Still has edited and released God and Israel: Providence and Purpose in Romans 9–11. This new book traces the ways in which providence and purpose are realized as God’s Word to and about Israel in Romans 9–11. Written by gifted and tested Pauline interpreters, the volume offers a fresh reading of this vexed and vexing part of Paul in the context of Romans and the Pauline witness.

Dr. David Wilhite has released Ancient African Christianity: An Introduction to a Unique Context and Tradition. Christianity spread across North Africa early, and it remained there as a powerful force much longer than anticipated. While this African form of Christianity largely shared the Latin language and Roman culture of the wider empire, it also represented a unique tradition that was shaped by its context. Ancient African Christianity attempts to tell the story of Christianity in Africa from its inception to its eventual disappearance. Well-known writers such as Tertullian, Cyprian, and Augustine are studied in light of their African identity, and this tradition is explored in all its various expressions.
