Dr. Porter D. Steven Porter teaches courses in the history and theology of Christian mission with special concern for the ways in which the local church relates gospel, culture, and place. Raised in the Missouri Ozarks, he has spent his adult life in cities, including his appointment as an urban missionary in Miami, Florida, with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. He holds ordination in the National Baptist Convention (USA) and earned a B.A. with Honors from William Jewell College and a M.Div. from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Presently he is completing his Th.D. at Duke University with a dissertation on missionary bishop Lesslie Newbigin. In spring 2010, he received a Henry Luce Foundation grant to study Muslim-Christian relations at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Steven is married to Jodi, and together they have just embarked on the adventure of parenthood with their daughter, Ruth, born in May 2011.
