Though the term “cultural” is often construed broadly to include many aspects of human civilization, the Cultural Arts Experience (CAE) at Baylor is intended for the fine arts, specifically art, music, theatre, film, and literature, with the additional focus of these arts as seen through the lens of world cultures. The CAE requirement was originally conceived and promoted by the fine arts departments at Baylor as a more inclusive and meaningful way to engage students in the arts than in previously required fine arts courses.
Students are required to attend twelve approved Cultural Arts Experiences with at least two events from each of the following categories: Art, Film, Music, Theatre, and Literature/World Cultures
Although students are encouraged to attend as many events as they would like, students will only receive credit for up to four events per academic year.
*Depends on how attendance will be taken.*
After the event has been completed, students will be asked to show their Event Pass on the BaylorConnect app, or provide their student ID to obtain CAE credit. Students will be able to check if they have obtained credit for each event by checking their progress status on the BaylorConnect website, or by checking their Degree Audit through Bearweb. Please be patient as it may take up to a week for the credit to appear on your account.
If a week has passed and you did not receive credit for attending an event, contact cae@baylor.edu for additional support. In the meantime, check the calendar for another event! A missed opportunity may result in an unforgettable and enjoyable experience.
Students entering Baylor with 30 hours receive two event credits. Students entering Baylor with 60 hours receive six event credits.
While we encourage you to take part in cultural events outside of campus, no. CAE credit will only be given to approved events sponsored by a Baylor faculty member.
Though the primary focus of the CAE is fine arts experiences created at Baylor, exceptions could include off-campus events such as those in a Baylor Study Abroad program. Please check with your program's sponsor to determine if CAE’s will be offered during your program. If not, plan ahead to attend enough CAE events before your trip abroad.
Events are predetermined by the CAE committee. CAE’s will be approved in the areas of Art, Music, Theatre, Film, and Literature/World Cultures. These areas are represented on the CAE Committee by faculty from the departments of Art and Art History, English, Film & Digital Media, Modern Languages and Cultures, Theatre Arts, and the School of Music.
For a list of upcoming events, please check BaylorConnect and look for events labeled with a CAE marking.
