Formal Recruitment is the main process the National Panhellenic Conference sororities at Baylor University use to recruit new members. The recruitment process starts in the fall semester with orientation, registration, Panhellenic Preview, Meet your Gamma Chi's and various other opportunities to meet sorority members.
All women interested in participating in the recruitment process must register with the Baylor Panhellenic.
Formal Recruitment at Baylor is deferred to January. Eligibility of all women registered for recruitment is based on their academic performance at Baylor during the fall semester (please refer to the Grade Requirements for specific information). During the recruitment events, women will have the time to ask questions about sorority activities, financial obligations, new member programs, scholarship, community service and sorority life in general.
Participating in Formal Recruitment does not obligate a woman to join a sorority, nor does participation in the recruitment process guarantee that a woman will receive a bid to join a sorority.
Panhellenic recruitment is a mutual selection process, which means that both the potential members and the individual sororities are making choices. Potential members will make decisions regarding where they would like to return the following day and the sororities will make decisions regarding the women they want to invite to their parties. Potential members need to understand that they may not always get invited to the parties they would like to attend. Baylor has many amazing national sororities on our campus. Each sorority deserves consideration. The potential member needs to ask the question if it is more important to be a member of the Greek system or a member of a certain organization. Potential members need to understand that a few members of a sorority cannot speak for the entire organization. Impressions they may get from members during the fall or formal recruitment need to be weighed lightly. Many potential members set themselves up for disappointment by putting too much emphasis on what a few members have lead them to believe.
The Baylor Panhellenic Council and Baylor Fraternity & Sorority Life have been closely monitoring the COVID-19 developments and its potential impact on our spring recruitment experience. We reviewed recommendations from the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) and discussed with the Health Management team charged with navigating the institutional response to COVID-19.
The university is supportive of the recommendations and has approved a virtual-only Panhellenic recruitment process for Spring 2021. In collaboration with Baylor Fraternity & Sorority Life, chapter leadership, and advisors, Baylor Panhellenic revised the recruitment dates and format to enhance our community's safety.
The new dates for Spring 2021 Primary Recruitment are January 11th to 17th. All rounds will be held virtually.
January 11th – PNM Orientation
January 12th – 15th – Recruitment Rounds
January 17th – Bid Day
***Baylor University and Baylor's Panhellenic community will require that individuals remain at their permanent residences until Campus Living and Learning opens halls for all student move-in on January 14th. However, we do understand that individual circumstances could justify an exception to this requirement. Although exceptions are rarely granted, we do want you to have an opportunity to help us understand your individual circumstance(s) and explain why an approval for your return to campus early would be necessary. If you feel that your circumstances warrant an exception to return to campus prior to the halls opening on January 14, please email Erin Ellis (firstname.lastname@example.org)***
