Teachers get worn out spending evenings and weekends marking student work. It’s especially defeating when students refuse to revise and redo. For many students it is easier to quit. During this daylong workshop, Cris Tovani will share literacy strategies that will help teachers re-engage their students. One such strategy cited by current studies is using feedback to improve the quality of students’ work. Unfortunately, giving feedback to multiple classrooms of students is a daunting task. Cris will share current research, planning ideas and assessment structures that will make the revising and rereading processes manageable.
Cris Tovani is a high school reading specialist and English teacher. A nationally known consultant, she chooses to continue teaching high school students full-time.

• Study how to write learning targets and matched assessments to get students to re-enter reading and writing tasks
The middle/secondary conference will take place at ESC Region 12 on Tuesday, October 4th and will be a full-day workshop with Cris Tovani focusing on reading and writing strategies for adolescents. The conference is appropriate for both ELA and content area teachers. Attendees will be free to go to lunch from 11:00-12:30 and return for the afternoon session. They may also bring a lunch if they wish to remain at ESC Region 12 during this time.
Cris Tovani taught elementary school for ten years before becoming a high school reading specialist and English teacher. A nationally known consultant, she chooses to continue teaching high school students full-time. She has also worked for many years as a staff developer for the Denver-based Public Education and Business Coalition (PEBC), the consortium that has received national acclaim for its work in reading comprehension reform. In addition to teaching and consulting, she has served as an adjunct instructor for the University of Denver and the University of Colorado at Denver.
Cris has authored the books I Read It, but I Don’t Get It, Do I Really Have to Teach Reading?, and the videotape sets “Thoughtful Reading” and “Comprehending Content."
