Dr. Kevin Chambliss was appointed Interim Vice Provost for Research in January 2019 and appointed as Vice Provost for Research by Nancy Brickhouse on July 10, 2019. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Chambliss served Baylor as a Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry (2001-present), as Graduate Program Director for The Institute of Ecological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and for the last two years as Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education in the College of Arts & Sciences.
Dr. Chambliss received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Ouachita Baptist University and earned his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Colorado State University (with Profs. S.H. Strauss and C.R. Martin). He was a postdoctoral fellow (with B.A. Moyer) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Research in the Chambliss lab has focused on the development of innovative tools, methods and approaches to interrogate chemical mixtures on a molecular level. An overarching goal of this research, involving students and, over time, more than 25 local, national and international senior-scientist collaborators, is to develop practical solutions to complex, interdisciplinary problems at the nexus of energy, environment and health. The Chambliss lab has been continuously funded since 2002, with generous support from a variety of federal (USDA/NIFA, DoE, DoD, NOAA, EPA), state, and industry sponsors.
As the university’s chief research officer, the Vice Provost for Research leads staff from several offices (e.g., Sponsored Programs, Research Compliance, Research Advancement, Technology Commercialization and Industry Engagement) that assist faculty from all academic units in identifying, obtaining and managing the funding needed to support research and scholarship. The office also assists faculty in building partnerships and collaborations with entities outside of the university and pursues technology transfer and licensing opportunities with industry that advance the university’s academic mission. The Vice Provost for Research also leads staff that provide administrators with necessary research-related information to support decision making and staff that assist other units in publicizing faculty research successes and raising awareness of the research focus of Baylor University.
