Baylor Releases Statement on Student Assault

April 4, 2006

Dr. Dub Oliver, Baylor University's interim vice president for student life, released the following statement about a reported assault over the weekend on the Baylor campus:

At approximately 5 p.m. Sunday a Baylor University student reported to the university's Department of Public Safety that she had been assaulted between 8:45 and 9 p.m. the previous evening near the Draper Academic Building. The student described the perpetrator as a white male in his mid-30s and said she did not believe the perpetrator to be another Baylor student. The student reported that the person who assaulted her used disrespectful ethnic and religious statements during the assault.

The university is treating this reported incident very seriously and is in the process of investigating the matter in cooperation with law enforcement agencies. Baylor strives to provide a safe and supportive environment for all students. As a faith-based institution, Baylor is sensitive to, and very concerned about, the report of an assault involving ethnic or religious intolerance. I have been in contact with the student and have assured her that Baylor University will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement officials regarding this reported incident.

Individuals having any information about this incident are encouraged to contact the Baylor Department of Public Safety at (254) 710-2222.
