Mary Edington, a junior at Baylor University who is pursuing degrees in Spanish and Russian, received a second-place award in an essay contest sponsored by CARTA (Central Association of Russian Teachers of America) and the Russian Consulate General in Houston. Edington's paper, "Survival," emphasized the "cooperation between the United States and the Soviet Union during WWII."
The contest was held in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the allied victory over Nazi Germany in 1945 and was open to university students from Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri.
The winners of the contest in both a high school and a university division were announced at the CARTA conference in San Antonio. Edington will be honored with a certificate and a gift at a reception May 6 at the Russian Consulate General in Houston.
