The 2022 Baylor Concerto Competition

The Baylor Concerto Competition’s final round will take place on Saturday, January 22, in Jones Concert Hall, located in the Glennis McCrary Music Building. Performing will be eight finalists who were selected from among Baylor students who entered the contest many weeks ago.
To open Session One at 10:00 a.m., Cole Allex will be the soloist in the Concerto for Alto Saxophone of German composer Ingolf Dahl, written in 1949. Accompanying him will be Baylor’s Senior Lecturer in Collaborative Piano, Dr. Cameron Hofmann.
Next, oboist Myles Meador will be joined by Dr. Hofmann (playing the orchestral part) for a performance of Spirit of the Wild from 2016 by Australian composer Nigel Westlake.
Darren Carter will be the soloist in Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47, from 1904. Again, Dr. Hofmann will be the collaborative pianist.
German composer Richard Strauss wrote his Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, Op. 11, in 1882. It will be played by soloist Blake Moreland, with Dr. Hofmann as accompanist.
Session Two of the Baylor Concerto Competition will begin at 1:15 p.m. with Italian opera composer Amilcare Ponchielli’s Flicorno Basso (Flugelhorn) Concerto, Op. 155, from 1872. It will be played by euphonium soloist Hunter Bellows and Lecturer in Piano Dr. In-Ja Eshelman.
Next, Sam Day will be the soloist in Bohemian composer Antonín Dvoƙák’s Cello Concerto in B minor from 1894, with Lecturer in Class Piano Dr. Rajung Yang as accompanist.
It was in 1829 that Polish composer Frédéric Chopin wrote his Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21. Cezary Karwowski will perform the solo part, and the second pianist (playing the orchestral part) will be Dr. Yang.
Concluding the second session will be soloist Joshua Painter in German composer Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58, from 1806. Again, the orchestral part will be played by pianist Dr. Yang.
