The Baylor University Women's Choir in Spring Concert

April 9, 2015
Guest conductors Cody Miller and Whitney Wick will lead the Baylor University Women’s Choir in a spring concert called “Hope Is the Thing with Feathers,” on Sunday, April 19, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Waco, located at Fifth Street and Webster Avenue. This choral ensemble’s accompanist is Maiko Sugahara.
The principal conductor of the Women’s Choir is Dinah Menger, Lecturer in Choral Activities. Mr. Miller is a graduate student from Houston, Ms. Wick is a senior from Leander, and Ms. Sugahara is a graduate student from Iwaki, Japan. Among the guest artists are two members of the Baylor University music faculty: hornist Jeffrey Powers and harpist Karen Abramson Smith.
The program will open with “O Aula Nobilis” by William Mathias, in a performance that features accompaniment from three trumpets, timpani, percussion, and piano duet.
Next, the choir will sing two songs from Vier Gesänge, Op. 17, by Johannes Brahms, “Laudate Domino” by Z. Randall Stroope, “Famine Song” by Michael Culloton, and the Phillip Lawson arrangement of John David’s “You Are the New Day.”
Also to be heard are Susan LaBarr’s setting of the Emily Dickinson poem “Hope Is the Thing with Feathers” (from which the concert derives its title), an arrangement by Liliana Cangiano of Alberto Favarra’s “Te Quiero,” Feodosiy Rebtsov’s arrangement of the Russian folk song “Venicki,” and “I Shall Keep Singing” by Brian Holmes.
Closing the program will be a performance, complete with percussion and choreography, of Rosephanye Powell’s “Still I Rise.”
This concert is free of charge and open to the public. For more information, call the Baylor University School of Music at 254-710-3991.
