Timothy McKinney, Professor of Music Theory and Graduate Program Director, came to Baylor in 2002 from the University of Texas at Arlington, where he was Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Liberal Arts. He earned degrees from the University of North Texas (PhD), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (MM), and William Jewell College (BS). His research interests include text/music relationships, the history of music theory, and musical form. His publications include the book Adrian Willaert and the Theory of Interval Affect: The Musica nova Madrigals and the Novel Theories of Zarlino and Vicentino and articles and reviews in Musical Quarterly, Early Music, Music Theory Spectrum, Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, Theoria, and other journals and edited volumes. He has read papers for the Society for Music Theory, the American Musicological Society, and other national/international conferences. He serves on the editorial board of Theoria. He received Baylor’s Outstanding Professor for Significant Contributions to the Academic Community award in 2013, and in 2014-2015 served as Interim Dean of the School of Music. After acting as Academic Studies Division Director from 2015-2018, he became Graduate Program Director in June 2018.
