After a second consecutive year of receiving a record-breaking number of applications, Baylor University has announced it is establishing a wait list for the freshman class entering fall 2011.

As of March 4, Baylor has received more than 38,000 applications, and deposits to reserve a spot in next year's freshman class continue to run at historic highs, ahead of last year by 10.7 percent. The diversity and academic caliber of the incoming class also continue to track strongly. As of March 4, the average SAT and ACT scores of deposited students are significantly higher than last year at this time. Baylor expects to enroll a class of about 3,100 in the fall of 2011.

Last year's freshman class at Baylor included a record 3,259 students, which topped the previous record from fall 2005, when 3,168 freshmen enrolled at Baylor.

"This year, we have received a record number of applications from very talented candidates," said Jennifer L. Carron, assistant vice president of admissions at Baylor. "In order for Baylor to ensure the highest quality educational experience to all students we enroll, it is important that we carefully monitor the size of our incoming class. To assist us, we have decided to freeze our admissions and establish a wait list for the 2011 freshman class. The applicants being asked to join the wait list are great students. Because we're committed to small classes and a low student-to-faculty ratio, we want to make sure we don't over enroll the incoming class."

Baylor is contacting current applicants about the opportunity to be placed on the wait list and will continue to review applications and move students from the wait list as space becomes available.

"With the economy still struggling to recover, it's good to know that talented students are choosing Baylor, which provides good value and great academics," Carron said. "We look forward to enrolling another exceptional class this fall."
