November 7, 1995

by Richard Veit

The Baylor University Wind Ensemble will present a concert at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 14, in Jones Concert Hall. The 60-member Wind Ensemble is conducted by Michael L. Haithcock, professor of conducting and director of bands.
The concert will open with music by French composer Reynaldo Hahn featuring five of the seven movements from his dance suite for winds, "Le bal de Béatrice d'Este."
Next, Gerald Luckhardt, assistant professor and associate director of bands, will conduct Clark McCallister's transcription of the "Ricercare a 6" from Johann Sebastian Bach's "Musical Offering."
Four student percussionists-Hezekiah McMurray, Gerald Novak, Robert Roche, and Brian Zator-will be featured in Michael Colgrass's Pulitzer Prize winning composition, "Déjà vu," which was written in 1977 on commission from the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Colgrass prepared the version for percussion quartet and wind ensemble 10 years later.
Following intermission, the Wind Ensemble will perform Paul Hindemith's "Symphony in B-flat for Concert Band" and Mark Hindsley's transcription for winds of Aaron Copland's popular "El Salón México."
The Wind Ensemble concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Baylor School of Music at 755-3991.
