Frauke Harvey to Speak on Upcoming Elections in Russia Nov. 9

November 3, 1995

Baylor University professor Dr. Frauke A. Harvey, director of German, Russian and Japanese, will speak on the upcoming elections in Russia at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in Room 201 of Poage Library.
Harvey will discuss political and economic issues taken from the Russian press and several contacts in Moscow in relating to upcoming elections in Russia. According to her, these elections could not only shape Russia but have a significant effect on the United States.
"There is a real question whether Russia will be taken over by hard-line factions or continue to cooperate with the western countries. There is a strong nationalist sentiment in Russia, but they have avoided major military conflicts. Some people want to rebuild the military to its former strength, but I don't think anyone wants to see Stalin's time again," Harvey said.
The lecture is part of a series held by the Council for International Education at 4 p.m. Thursdays in Room 201 of the Poage Library.
