Baylor to Host 'Alumni by Choice' Luncheon Sept. 16

September 12, 1995

The Baylor University Alumni Association will honor non-alumni supporters of the university at noon Saturday, Sept. 16, on the fifth floor of the Cashion Academic Center of the Hankamer School of Business during its "Alumni By Choice" luncheon.
Thirty-eight individuals will be honored as "Alumni By Choice" and presented certificates by Baylor President Robert B. Sloan Jr.
Speaking at the luncheon will be Merrie Beckham, who was the first recipient of the "Alumni By Choice" honor. She is a homemaker, church and community leader from Dallas. Beckham is also active in a national young mothers support group called Mothers of Preschool Children (MOPS).
She became involved with Baylor through her husband, Carroll "Sparky" Beckham, a former trustee of Baylor. Though a graduate of the University of California, Merrie has been very active in the Baylor family. Well known for her humorous speeches, Merrie relates the experience of people who come into Baylor tradition through marriage, employment or other means, who did not attend the university.
The "Alumni By Choice" program was begun in 1986 for those people who did not attend Baylor but believe in the mission and purposes of the institution.
