University Breaks For Diadeloso April 22

April 20, 2004

Baylor University will celebrate its 70th annual Diadeloso, the all university spring "play day," beginning at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 22, throughout 5th Street and Fountain Mall. This year's theme is "Have a Nice Dia" and is sponsored by the Baylor Chamber of Commerce.
Various activities and live performances will be open to the Baylor community throughout the day. Hypnotist Terry Stokes Jr. will return again this year for an interactive show on the stage in front of Marrs McLean Gymnasium from 11:05 to 11:55 a.m., 1:15 to 2 p.m. and 4 to 4:45 p.m. Other featured performers include the Baylor Yell Leaders and Song Leaders, Panic Squad, Baylor Dance Squad, Heavenly Voices Gospel Choir, Baylor Swing Dance Society and Baylor Latin Dance Society. The National Pan-Hellenic Council's Step Show will showcase step performances by sororities and fraternities from 2 to 3:15 p.m.
Several student organizations will sponsor game booths, giant inflatables and other activities located along Fountain Mall throughout the day. Students may also participate in several tournaments throughout the day, including 3-on-3 basketball, tug-of-war, racquetball, ultimate Frisbee, a homerun derby, arm wrestling, an adventure race, Taboo, Cranium and a 5k fun run. Student entry fees vary depending on the tournament.
The day's events will conclude with a viewing of the 1986 movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" at 8:30 p.m. on Burleson Quadrangle.
Diadeloso originated in 1934 to give students a break from classes. The name of the tradition has changed through the years from "All University Day" to "Physical Fitness Day" to "May Day." In 1966, the student body voted to name the annual event "Diadeloso" or "The Day of the Bear."
