Dr. Gregory T. Garrett, professor of English, served as moderator for a panel discussion titled "Spiritual Journeys" and took part in a panel discussion for a master class titled "Creative Prose About Music" Dec. 4-8 at the Words and Music festival in New Orleans. He preached three sermons Jan. 4 at St. James Episcopal Church in Austin. He presented a teacher training session on narrative Jan. 8-9 for the Midway Independent School District. He presented a workshop on creating character Jan. 9 at the Windhover Literary Festival at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton.


Dr. C. Alton Hassell, senior lecturer in chemistry, made the following presentations to American Chemical Society sections: "Using Nuclear Chemistry to Study Antique Water Marks" Oct. 14 to the Southern Illinois section in Cape Giradeau, Mo., and Oct. 16 to the South Central Missouri section in Rolla, Mo.; "A Chemist Wanders into Archaeology" Oct. 15 to the Ozark section in Springfield, Mo., Nov. 11 to the Baton Rouge section in Baton Rouge, Nov. 12 to the Louisiana section in New Orleans and Nov. 13 to the Mobile section in Mobile; and "Chemistry Appreciation 101: The Liberal Arts Course" Oct. 17 to the Mark Twain section in Macomb, Ill. He presented a seminar titled "A Chemist Wanders into Archaeology" Oct. 27 at Texas State University in San Marcos.


Paul A. McCoy, professor of art and Ceramist-in-Residence, had ceramic sculptures exhibited Dec. 7-Jan. 23 at a national juried exhibition titled "CraftForms 2003" at the Wayne Art Center in Wayne, Penn. He had ceramic sculptures exhibited Feb. 11-March 14 at a national juried exhibition titled "Vitrified Clay National: Form and Content" at Rockport Center for the Arts in Rockport, Texas.


Dr. Stephen L. Williams, assistant professor of museum studies, presented "The Strengths and Weaknesses of Natural History Conservation," "Evolving Dreams of the Museum Community and Their Affect on Conservation in the Future" and "Making a Difference in the Workplace by Understanding Basic Policy Development" Jan. 30 at Buffalo State University in Buffalo, N.Y.


Dr. Ralph C. Wood, University Professor of Theology and Literature, made the following presentations: "Tolkien's Transformation of Justice into Mercy in The Lord of the Rings" Aug. 29 at an American Political Science Association meeting in Philadelphia; "Baylor University: Being Christian in the New Millennium" Oct. 4 at the Formation and Renewal conference at the University of Notre Dame; "The Untold Story of Sabbath Lily Hawks: Flannery O'Connor and the Gospel of Life" Oct. 10 at the Revelations: Flannery O'Connor, the Visionary and the Vernacular conference at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville; "'Jesus Thrown Everything Off Balance': Flannery O'Connor and Catholic Culture" Nov. 10 at the University of Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Culture; and "The Gospel According to The Lord of the Rings" Nov. 3 at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., Nov. 4 at at Illinois State University in Bloomington, Nov. 14-15 at Austin Heights Baptist Church in Nacogdoches, Nov. 20 at Friends University in Wichita, Kan., Nov. 22 at the Tolkien-Lewis Festival in Wichita, Nov. 30 at First Baptist Church in Austin, Dec. 14 and 21 at Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas, and Feb. 1 at First Baptist Church in Tyler.
