Alumni Invited To View Designs For Student Center Renovation
Four national architectural firms that specialize in college student center renovation projects are on the Baylor University campus this week, participating in a design competition exercise for the Bill Daniel Student Center renovation/expansion project.
Each firm will be presenting a three-dimensional model of the current student center setup and a model of their proposal for renovating and expanding the BDSC. All four models will be on display during Homecoming from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday, Nov. 7, and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 8, in the White-Beckham Room in the BDSC.
The four architectural firms are: HHPA, New York; MHTN, Salt Lake City; Sasaki Associates Inc., Watertown, Mass.; and WTW, Pittsburgh.
Before designing their proposals, the firms met with focus groups of students, faculty, staff and alumni to gain insight into possible changes to the student center. Construction on the BDSC began in 1940 but was delayed from 1943-46 because of World War II. The building was eventually completed in 1947.
"The goal of this design competition exercise is to create energy and excitement for the proposed BDSC renovation/expansion and to identify the architectural firm that we would like to select for this important project," said Scott Wade, student union director at Baylor.
