Dr. Martin Medhurst, distinguished professor of rhetoric and communication and professor of political science at Baylor University, will receive the Golden Anniversary Award from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Northern Illinois University, founded in 1959, is celebrating its golden anniversary by honoring 50 alumni.

Medhurst graduated from NIU in 1975 with a master's degree in speech communication.

"I received a fantastic education there. It was pivotal two years for me," Medhurst said. He switched his educational goals from becoming a high school teacher to becoming a college professor and pursuing his doctorate.

The award will be presented to Medhurst at a banquet on Sept. 25, 2009 in DeKalb.

"I feel very honored to be selected as one of the golden anniversary alumni," Medhurst said. "I'm looking forward to going back and seeing my friends and DeKalb, which I haven't seen in many years."
