Baylor's Center for Gerontological Studies to Hold Interfaith Celebration of Life for Families and Seniors with Alzheimer's

The Center for Gerontological Studies in Baylor University's School of Social Work will host Interfaith Celebration of Life for families and seniors with Alzheimer's and Related Disorders at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at the First Presbyterian Church of Waco.

The celebration will include a time for music and prayer focusing on three topics: expression of the journey, expression of the loss and celebration of the families and community. Family members and their loved ones affected by Alzheimer's and related disorders, pastors and students are encouraged to attend. Light refreshments will follow the service.

The celebration is sponsored by Baylor's Center for Gerontological Studies, the Alzheimer's Association and First Presbyterian Church of Waco.

"Often families become estranged from the congregations the first time the impaired senior speaks out in worship or insults someone over coffee," said Judi Stolz, manager for the Center for Gerontological Studies. "People with Alzheimer's disease are often unpredictable and even uncontrollable. It is easier for families to stay away from church then to bring them."

"It is our hope that the event will bring the community together to let families of every faith tradition know they are supported throughout this challenging illness," Stolz said.

Many local presenters representing different faiths will share music, readings, reflections and prayers.
