Baylor Woodwind Quintet To Perform Nov. 12

The Baylor University Woodwind Quintet, a chamber ensemble featuring members of the School of Music woodwind faculty, will present a concert at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, in Meadows Recital Hall in the Glennis McCrary Music Building.
The quintet is comprised of associate professor of flute Helen Ann Shanley, professor of clarinet Richard Shanley, professor of oboe Doris DeLoach, lecturer in bassoon Jeffrey McCray and assistant professor of horn Jeffrey Powers.
The concert will open with the Woodwind Quintet in G minor by 18th-century German composer Franz Danzi. This piece, the second of three in his Opus 56 set, dates from around 1820.
Next this chamber group will present a modern work, the Woodwind Quintet of 1948 by American composer Elliott Carter.
French composer and pianist Claude Arrieu wrote her Quintet in C major in the year 1955. It is in five movements of contrasting tempos: fast-slow-fast-slow-fast.
Concluding the program will be Aires Tropicales by Cuban saxophonist and composer Paquito d'Rivera. For this work, the Baylor Woodwind Quintet will be joined by Alcídes Rodríguez, who will play the cuatro (a guitar-like instrument, related to the Spanish vihuela) and maracas. Aires Tropicales is in three movements -- "Morning Dance," "Venezuelan Waltz" and "Country Dance."
