Baylor Focused On Community Service With Steppin' Out
More than 3,000 Baylor University students will participate in the annual Steppin' Out community service program from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4, at various work sites throughout the Waco community and surrounding areas.
The project usually is held on a Saturday morning but was moved because of the Baylor-Texas football game, which itself was moved to an earlier kickoff time (11:30 a.m.) Saturday at Floyd Casey Stadium.
Students and other volunteers will gather at 1 p.m. Sunday in front of the Bill Daniel Student Center to receive their assignments, which include house painting, yard work and other tasks. Several Waco dignitaries, including Waco Mayor Linda Ethridge and state representatives Kip Averitt and Jim Dunnam, also will take part in the community service project.
At the completion of the project, Baylor volunteers and the families they served will return to campus for a celebration of service, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the SUB Bowl outside the Bill Daniel Student Center. Local restaurants have donated food for the occasion. San Antonio band Fairhaven will play in concert.
Steppin' Out is held every semester and brings together more than 70 Baylor groups, thousands of students and various community organizations to participate in numerous community service projects around the city.
Co-Director Jen Wolfinger said, "I think that Steppin' Out is one of Baylor's strongest traditions, since its beginning back in 1985. This project gives students the opportunity to reach out to the community and serve the needs of those around us."
