Parents Experience Campus Life During Parents Weekend

September 6, 2005

Parents of Baylor University students can discover the "Baylor experience" through various activities throughout Parents Weekend Friday, Sept. 9, and Saturday, Sept. 10, on the Baylor campus.
A university tradition since 1960, Parents Weekend aims to familiarize parents with the campus and their child's experience at Baylor. Scheduled events allow parents to personally sample Baylor's unique traditions, history, academic excellence, athletic programs and student talent.
Registration will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Bill Daniel Student Center, where parents will receive their official Parents Weekend guide, a schedule of the weekend's events and other information. Parents Weekend shirts and polos will be available for purchase at this time.
The Baylor bear mascots, Judge Joy Reynolds and Judge Sue "Lady"' Sloan, will welcome participants during Open Bear Pit' from 3 to 5 p.m. at the recently updated Bill and Eva Williams Bear Habitat. During that same time, Dr Pepper Hour will provide an informal atmosphere for conversation between parents, students and staff in Barfield Drawing Room on the second floor of the Bill Daniel Student Center.
As the oldest institution for higher learning in Texas, Baylor is rich in history. Members of the Baylor Chamber of Commerce will guide a tour of campus highlighting little-known historical facts about the university. The tour will begin at 5 p.m. on 5th Street outside of the Bill Daniel Student Center.
Friday evening the Baylor community will come together for After Dark, which features student talent varying from solo performances and dance to stand-up comedy and musical theater. Two shows will be held at 7 and 10 p.m. in Waco Hall. Tickets range in price from $9 to $13 and are on sale at the Ticket Office in the Bill Daniel Student Center.
Following Friday evening's events, students and their families are invited to attend a Dessert Party, where they can relax and enjoy free refreshments and entertainment from 9 to 10:30 p.m. in Barfield Drawing Room.
Saturday's activities will begin with a Parent-Faculty Coffee at 8:30 a.m. on Founders Mall. Here parents will be able to meet the faculty and administration who have influenced their children both in and out of the classroom. Baylor University is proud of their attentive staff and low student-to-faculty ratio, which provides more individual attention for students.
Dinner on the Grounds, a picnic-style meal for the Baylor family, will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Burleson Quadrangle. Baylor Interim President William D. Underwood will address the crowd, and entertainment includes a performance by the Morticians. Tickets are available through the Ticket Office of the Bill Daniel Student Center for $13.
Parents Weekend will conclude with the Baylor Bear football game against the Samford University Bulldogs. Kickoff will be at 6 p.m. at Floyd Casey Stadium. Tickets are available through the Baylor Athletic Ticket Office, at 1-800-BaylorU ext. 7 or www.baylorbears.com .
