Baylor Celebrates Diadeloso April 5

March 29, 2001

Baylor University will celebrate its 66th annual Diadeloso at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 5, on the intramural fields and at the McLane Student Life Center.
The theme for this year's "Day of the Bear" is "Diadeloso 2001." This year's entertainment includes live bands such as Riverside, Back Porch Band and Destination Known.
Hypnotist Terry Stokes Jr., a favorite attraction, will participate. The National Panhellenic Council Stomp Show, the Baylor Spirit Squad and Yell Leaders, the Latin Dance Society and Segue will perform throughout the day.
Lunch will be served on the grounds. Student meal plans may be used or meal tickets may be purchased on-site for $6.50. Tournaments scheduled throughout the day will include 3 on 3 basketball, a 5K fun run, flag football, homerun derby, taboo, tennis, tug-of-war, ultimate Frisbee and volleyball. Fees to participate vary with each tournament. Student organizations also will sponsor booths.
A new attraction, "DiaLightsOut," will take place at 9 p.m. at the intramural fields, which will feature a fireworks display accompanied by the Baylor Symphony Orchestra. A free showing of the movie "Star Wars" will follow.
Diadeloso originated in 1934 to give students a break from classes. Baylor Chamber of Commerce began organizing the spring holiday in 1935 and it quickly became an annual event. The name of the occasion has changed through the years from "All University Day" to "Physical Fitness Day" to "May Day." In 1966, the student body voted to name the annual event "Diadeloso" or "The Day of the Bear."
