Baylor Wind Ensemble Concert To Perform March 16

The Baylor University wind ensemble will present a concert at 8 p.m. Friday, March 16, in Jones Concert Hall. The performance is part of the North American Saxophone Alliance's Region IV Conference.
The wind ensemble is conducted by Michael Haithcock, professor of conducting and director of bands. Soloists for the concert will be Kenneth Tse, a member of the University of Missouri music faculty, and Michael Jacobson, professor of saxophone at Baylor.
Opening the program will be Daniel Asia's Gateways, which was written for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's centennial celebration in 1994.
A familiar melody arranged by Percy Grainger, the 1918 setting of "Irish Tune from County Derry" better known as "Danny Boy," will follow.
German-American composer Bernard Heiden, who died last year at the age of 89, wrote his Fantasia Concertante for Saxophone and Winds Orchestra in 1987. Tse will serve as the soloist.
Holy Roller, by American composer Libby Larsen, captures the rhythms and excitement of an old-time revival meeting. Originally scored for saxophone and piano in 1997, it was orchestrated for saxophone and wind ensemble in 1999 by John Boyd. Jacobson will serve as soloist.
Concluding the program will be the Concertino for Quartet of Saxophones and Wind Orchestra, a work dating from 1955 by French composer Pierre-Max Dubois.
