Baylor University's Gov. Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village, part of the Strecker Museum Complex, will host a variety of summer programs for 2-year-olds to children entering the eighth grade.
"Barnyard Buddies" will introduce 2- and 3-year-old children to farm animals. Participants will learn about sheep, donkeys and goats. Class sessions will be held June 19-23 and June 26-30, and each child must be accompanied by an adult.
At "Life on the Farm," children entering preschool through first grade will explore everyday life on a 19th century farm, while second through fourth graders can experience life at a typical 19th century village during "A Visit to Pleasant View." Two camp sessions will be held June 5-9 and June 12-16. "Summer Days," for first- through fourth-grade students, will enable participants to make 19th-century crafts and play Victorian games. The camps will run June 19-23 and June 26-30.
Children interested in archeology will enjoy "Keepers of the Treasure," a camp for students in fifth through seventh grade. Participants will conduct an archeological dig, explore historic records and help restore the interior of the Village General Store and Tenant House. The session will run June 12-16.
"Huckleberry Summer" will be filled with a selection of activities that explores life along a river in a Texas rural farm community. Suitable for children entering fourth through sixth grade, the camp will run July 10-14 and July 17-21.
Children in fourth through eighth grade interested in drama can participate in two different theater classes. "The Village Players Drama Camp," a two-week class that runs June 19-23 and June 26-30, will teach participants to portray a resident in the Historic Village. The three-week Melodrama Theater Drama Camp will help children develop their acting skills and will culminate in a public performance of "Millennium Celebration of Rural Life." The class is schedule for July 10-28.
The summer programs range in cost from $40 for "Barnyard Buddies" to $150 for the melodrama camp. General registration will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at the Ollie Mae Moen Discovery Center. For more information, contact the Gov. Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village at 710-1160.
