With two Baylor graduation ceremonies, NCAA Tournament tennis, and TAPPS state championship baseball and softball games taking place Saturday, May 13, at venues along University Parks Drive, Baylor public safety officials are strongly encouraging that people planning to attend these events leave in plenty of time and be prepared for traffic congestion near the Ferrell Center.
"We really expect some major traffic slowdowns and need folks to anticipate that prior to their arrival," said Chief Jim Doak of the Baylor Department of Public Safety. "With the multiple events, including two Baylor graduation ceremonies, there are going to be multiple problems. We encourage everyone to leave as early as possible, to be patient and to be prepared for slower than usual traffic."
Baylor DPS officers will be on duty Saturday directing the traffic flow at intersections along University Parks Drive, as well as the Ferrell Center entrance on LaSalle Avenue.
Baylor commencement ceremonies are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Ferrell Center. Eight TAPPS state championship games will be played at the Baylor baseball and softball parks beginning at 10 a.m. NCAA Tournament tennis, hosted by Baylor's men's tennis team, also begins at 10 a.m. at the Streich Tennis Courts. Baylor's first round match vs. Marist College is set for 2 p.m.
Shuttle buses will run continuously from the Waco Convention Center to the Baylor ballparks beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, said Tom Hill, Ferrell Center director. Hill also said additional parking will be available behind the softball stadium, in the lot behind the soccer field, and on the lacrosse field next to Streich Tennis Courts. Visitors also are welcome to park in the lots by the Wiethorn Visitors Center on the Baylor campus.
