Members of the Hankamer School of Business Staff Association at Baylor University presented contributions totaling $400 and numerous childcare items to Waco's AngelCare Pregnancy Resource Center during a campus luncheon program Tuesday.
AngelCare offers assistance and counseling to new mothers. The center provides classes on adoption, parenting, childbirth, budgeting, and relationships and assists new mothers with clothing, furniture, diapers, formula and supplies.
Members of the Hankamer Staff Association decided to assist AngelCare as their annual spring community service project. The response was "overwhelming," said project co-chairs Dorynda Brock and Amy Moravec. In just two-and-a-half weeks, Hankamer staff and faculty members and their families had filled the donation boxes and collection centers at the school with contributions and babycare items, including a crib, blankets, clothing, diapers, formula and other items. In addition, the school presented two computers and a printer for use in the center's office.
Accepting the donations, AngelCare director Cathy Sones said the center serves more than 200 women each month. "We are here for the thousands of young women who face unplanned pregnancies," she said. "Each of us is committed to caring for women during this fragile time in their lives, meeting real needs with real solutions."
AngelCare has served more than 20,000 women since its inception in May 1984 (originally named the Waco Crisis Pregnancy Center). Sones, a 1978 Baylor business graduate and a former credit analyst, became involved in 1988 as a volunteer with the Waco Crisis Pregnancy Center. She became director in 1991.
The Hankamer School of Business Staff Association has been involved in a number of community service projects. The nearly 40 members of the association have "adopted" a local nursing home and regularly take flowers and visit the residents. At Christmas, the association members and their families present a carol concert at the nursing home. Other association activities included a redecoration project at the Waco Family Abuse Center.
