Socall to Hold Annual Meeting at Baylor April 23-24

April 21, 1999

The Baylor department of foreign languages and Dr. Ute Lahaie, assistant professor of German, Russian and Japanese and director of the language acquisition center, will host the annual meeting of the South Central Association for Language Learning Technology (SOCALL) April
23-24.
The conference, Language Learning Technologies, Hardware and Software Issues on the Advent of a New Millennium, will begin with a continental breakfast and registration at 8 a.m. Friday in the Language Acquisition Center located on the third floor of Draper Academic Building. Friday's last scheduled event is a banquet dinner at 6:45 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel.
Saturday's activities will begin at 8:00 a.m. in the language acquisition center lobby and will conclude with a lecture by John Thorburn, assistant professor of classics at Baylor. His lecture, titled "Construction and Implementation of an Electronic Chalkboard for Inflected Language Instruction," will begin at 3:45 p.m. in the language acquisition center.
Lahaie said that the goals of the conference are to exchange ideas and research in language learning technology.
"Language instructors and directors of learning centers are often isolated," Lahaie said. "The conference gives us an opportunity to discuss technology that can support and improve language learning."
Lahaie is expecting approximately 40 to 50 people from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas to attend the conference. SOCALL '98 was the largest conference in the organization's history with more than 40 language instructors attending.
