Sister Denomination Day Brings Catholic Bishop to Baylor

March 19, 1998

Bishop John Edward McCarthy will speak to students and faculty during Baylor University's Chapel-Forum at 10 and 11 a.m. Monday in Waco Hall as part of the university's annual Sister Denomination Day.
The program honors the many different religious denominational backgrounds among Baylor's students, faculty and staff. "We want to give students a clearer picture of the larger body of Christ," said Dr. Rosalie Beck, co-chairperson of the Sister Denomination Day Committee and associate professor of religion.
Bishop McCarthy presides over the Austin Diocese which also includes the Waco area, a position he has held for more than 10 years. His speech, titled "Christianity in Texas: A Roman Catholic Reality," will highlight the presence of the Catholic church in Hispanic households throughout Texas prior to Texas' annexation.
