WACO, Texas (Sept. 12, 2019) – Baylor University recently launched its Solid Gold Neighbor initiative, a community engagement initiative that serves as a point of connection, coordination, engagement and innovation by helping marshal the University’s resources in support of goals and opportunities important to the Waco community.

The Solid Gold Neighbor initiative serves the community through five focus areas:

  • Economic Development
  • Health
  • Education
  • Cultural Wealth
  • City Growth

The City Growth focus area emphasizes the good work being done around engaging the Baylor campus community with Waco, as the city develops rich arts, robust entertainment and an energetic city center that attracts and retains talent, further strengthening the bond between Waco and Baylor.

A key program under City Growth is the Go Gold! program, which connects Baylor and Waco in three ways:

  • Go Gold! Discounts provide offers and deals for Baylor faculty, staff and students to dine, attend and visit the best restaurants, entertainment and cultural attractions Waco has to offer.
  • Go Gold! Giveaways are digital scavenger hunts, in which boxes filled with curated Waco and Baylor experiences are hidden monthly for the community to discover.
  • Go Gold! Spirit is a movement to encourage all Wacoans to fling their green and gold around town by wearing their Baylor spirit gear each Friday, all year long. In August, the Waco City Council designated each Friday throughout the year as Spirit Friday across Waco to encourage residents to join in the spirit program.

Each Go Gold! program is geared toward fostering a relationship between Baylor and Waco, where Baylor is viewed as Waco’s hometown team, said Krista Brinser, assistant director of community relations focused on City Growth in Baylor’s Office of External Affairs.

“We are excited to launch our Go Gold! Discount program with more than 50 partners offering deals to grab the attention of Baylor faculty, staff and students,” Brinser said. “We hope to see the Baylor community shop and eat locally, starting with downtown and moving across the city.”
