Journalism Dept. To Sponsor Area High School Newspaper

January 20, 1998

The Baylor University Department of Journalism will sponsor the production of a high school newspaper in cooperation with area high schools this spring.
Representatives of the journalism department will meet with interested students at 5 p.m. Tuesday, in Room 261 of the Castellaw Communications Building. The students will meet at various times throughout the semester for writing, editing and photography workshops.
Baylor journalism faculty and Baylor students also will work with the high school students in designing and selling advertising for the paper, which the students will publish in April. The paper's circulation will include area high schools, businesses and the Baylor campus.
High school students interested in the project should bring story ideas to the meeting, but they do not need previous journalism experience, said Lyndia Washington, Radford Visiting Professor of Journalism and coordinator of the project.
"Students will get to write, take photos, sell advertising and do all the things necessary to produce a newspaper," she said. "It also will give them an orientation to the Baylor journalism department."
There is no charge to the individual students or to their schools.
