WACO, Texas (March 29, 2018) – This week, Baylor University will host several lectures about environmental health sciences, Christian ethics and space science. The campus-wide community service day, “Steppin’ Out,” also will take place.

MONDAY, April 2
Easter Closures − Due to the Easter holiday, Baylor University will not hold classes and will close administrative offices Friday, March 30, through Monday, April 2, while other university facilities will modify their hours. WEDNESDAY, April 4
Chapel Highlights − Todd Still, Ph.D., The Charles J. and Eleanor McLerran Delancey Dean of George W. Truett Theological Seminary and William M. Hinson Professor of Christian Scriptures, will speak during Chapel services at 9:05, 10:10 and 11:15 a.m. in Waco Hall, 624 Speight Ave. Still is involved in many local churches and has served as custodian, music minister, youth minister, college minister, education minister, pastor and interim pastor. The Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - Baylor University, the Waco Community Race Relations Coalition, Baylor Dining Services and the Waco NAACP will hold a community reconciliation service commemorating the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 6 p.m. at Powell Chapel at Baylor's Truett Seminary, 1100 S. Third St. Light refreshments will be served from 5:30 to 6 p.m. More information about the service is available here.

MLK Jr. Day of Remembrance − Baylor University will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. with a carillon recital. The national ringing is coordinated by the National Civil Rights Museum and The King Center, and Baylor’s recital will take place at 6:45 p.m. in the McLane Carillon, located in Pat Neff Hall, 1320 S. Seventh St. The recital will be followed by a toll of 39 strokes at 7:05 p.m. to represent how the news of Dr. King’s death spread across our nation and throughout the world.

THURSDAY, April 5
Baylor Seminary Fair Day − Baylor University and George W. Truett Theological Seminary will host Seminary Fair Day on April 5. Truett Seminary representatives will visit with prospective students here at Baylor to provide information and answer questions. To learn more about the event, visit the Truett Seminary website.

Bailey Family Lecture in Christian Ethics − The Institute for Faith and Learning at Baylor University will host James Davison Hunter, Ph.D., The Labrosse-Levinson Distinguished Professor of Religion, Culture and Social Theory at the University of Virginia and executive director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture for the Bailey Family Lecture in Christian Ethics. Hunter will present his lecture, “Good Kids: Thinking Anew about the Moral Formation of Children,” at 3:30 p.m. in the Barfield Drawing Room, Bill Daniel Student Center, 1311 S. O.T. Hayward Distinguished Lecture Series − Baylor University’s department of geosciences will host Daniel P. Schrag, Ph.D., Sturgis Hooper Professor of Geology and director of Harvard University Center for the Environment, for the O.T. Hayward Distinguished Lecture Series. Schrag will present his lecture, “Energy, Climate and Innovation,” at 6:30 p.m. in Room D110 of the Baylor Sciences Building, 101 Bagby Ave. Refreshments will be served beside the E2 Elevator Landing. Texas Symposium on Wireless and Microwave Circuits and Systems − The Texas Symposium on Wireless and Microwave Circuits and Systems will take place April 5-6 at the Baylor Research and Innovation Collaboration Building, 100 Research Parkway. FRIDAY, April 6
CASPER Lecture − Baylor University’s Center for Astrophysics, Space Physics and Engineering Research (CASPER) will host a public lecture featuring Jens Schmidt, research assistant in CASPER as part of Baylor’s international collaboration with the Institute of Space Systems at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. Schmidt will present his lecture, “Plasma Applications in Materials Science: Evaporation of Tungsten in High-Energy Plasma Flows,” at 2:30 p.m. in Baylor Sciences Building, Room C.206, 101 Bagby Ave. Schmidt participated in research at the National Research Institute "Kurchatov Institute" in Moscow, Russia. SATURDAY, April 7
Lyceum Series − Baylor School of Music will host Michael Burritt, professor of percussion at the Eastman School of Music and one of the world’s leading percussion soloists; Doug Perkins, chamber musician and soloist who serves on the percussion faculty at the Boston Conservatory; and Ivan Trevino, an internationally recognized composer, percussionist and rock drummer. The three will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Jones Concert Hall in the Glennis McCrary Music Building, 110 Baylor Ave. This performance, a concert of chamber music, is free and open to the public. Steppin’ Out Day of Service − More than 2,000 Baylor students will volunteer in the greater Waco community for this traditional day of service. Once each semester, Steppin’ Out enhances student involvement in the community, coordinates volunteer service and provides opportunities for experiential learning, civic leadership and social responsibility. This semester’s service day will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All volunteers are invited to the Kick-Off Celebration at 8:30 a.m. before serving at their Steppin’ Out sites.
