WACO, Texas (Feb. 2, 2018) – Dan Schutte, one of the best-known and most influential composers of Catholic music for liturgy in the English-speaking world, will serve as the 2018 Hearn Innovators in Christian Music Series guest-in-residence. Schutte will perform at 6 p.m., Feb. 5 in Recital Hall II of Waco Hall, 624 Speight Ave.

“Dan Schutte has emerged in recent decades as one of the most important Catholic writers of songs for worship,” said Randall Bradley, D.M.A., The Ben H. Williams Professor of Music and director of the church music program and Center for Christian Music Studies at Baylor University. “However, his songs have traveled far beyond Catholic worship to be also included in most Protestant hymnals and song collections.”

The Hearn Innovators in Christian Music Series is presented by Baylor University's Center for Christian Music Studies and brings innovators in the field of Christian Music to the Baylor campus for a three-day residency. During this time, Schutte will be available to speak to classes, make public presentations and visit with students in small group settings.
In addition to his Jesuit formation, Schutte holds two master’s degrees in theology and liturgy, from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. He also was one of the founding members of the St. Louis Jesuits and some of his most well-known songs—“Here I Am, Lord,” “City of God” and "Sing a New Song”—are from his years of collaboration with the group.

“His song, ‘Here I Am, Lord,’ and others have been used in worship gatherings around the world,” Bradley said. “He has played a significant role in the post Vatican II renewal of worship among Catholics and Protestants alike.”
Schutte's activities at Baylor are free of charge and open to the public. For more information, visit the Baylor’s Center for Christian Music Studies website.
