WACO, Texas (March 31, 2017) – This week, Baylor University will host several notable speakers, lectures, concerts and events, including a symposium on World War I, a concert by the touring band of the United States Army and Baylor’s traditional Steppin’ Out Day of Service.

SUNDAY, April 2
The Environment of Toxicology and Chemistry – Baylor University environmental scientists will give presentations on pollution, industrial waste, air quality, broad-based cleaning products and more at 1 p.m. at the Mayborn Museum Complex, 1300 S. University Parks Drive. Museum admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors over 65 and $6 for children ages 2-12. Admission is free for Baylor students and museum members.

MONDAY, April 3
Chapel Highlights – Baylor graduate Brennan Lowery will speak in Chapel at 9:05, 10:10 and 11:15 a.m. Lowery is program manager at Karisimbi Partners in Kigali, Rwanda, a management consulting, operational management and investment services firm that works to alleviate poverty, improve community and shape industry through businesses. Noche Del Oso – Baylor University will host Noche Del Oso, an extension of the annual Dia Del Oso celebration. Activities include a flag football tournament at 3 p.m. and a crawfish boil at 5 p.m. in Touchdown Alley, followed by the flag football championship at McLane Stadium, 1001 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. After the tournament, there will be a screening of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story at 9 p.m. in McLane Stadium.

TUESDAY, April 4
Dia Del Oso – Baylor University will host its annual holiday, Dia Del Oso. Events throughout the day include a fun run, archery tag, a tug-of-war tournament and an exotic petting zoo. There will also be performances by Honest Men, hypnotist Jonathan Yeager, Virtuoso, Guerilla Troupe, the Swing Dance Society and Poppers, Lockers and Breakers. Institute for Studies of Religion Lecture – Mark Pike, Ph.D., head of the School of Education at the University of Leeds, will lecture on “Narnian Virtues and Character Education” at 4 p.m. in Cox Lecture Hall in Armstrong Browning Library, 710 Speight Ave. Pike is director of the Narnian Virtues Character Education Research Project, which helps young people cultivate the Narnian virtues of love, wisdom, justice, self-control, integrity and fortitude. This Institute for Studies of Religion event is free but registration is required.

Cross-Cultural Dinner – Baylor Formation will host a cross-cultural dinner at 6 p.m. in Bobo Spiritual Life Center, 500 Speight Ave. Click here for more information and a schedule of future cross-cultural engagement events.

For God and Country: World War I Symposium – The Institute for Studies of Religion will host “For God and Country: The United States and the Great War 1917-18,” a World War I symposium, with three lectures throughout the day in Cox Lecture Hall of Armstrong Browning Library, 710 Speight Ave. Philip Jenkins, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of History, will lecture on “Merchants of Death and Dreams of Peace: How Americans Came to Condemn the Great War” at 10:30 a.m. Barry Hankins, Ph.D., professor of history and interim chair of the history department, will lecture on “From Westminster to Versailles: Woodrow Wilson in the Aftermath of WWI” at 2 p.m. Jonathan Ebel, Ph.D., associate professor of religion at the University of Illinois, will lecture on “Thou Shalt Kill: American Christians, European Weapons, and the Sanctification of Killing in the Great War” at 3:30 p.m. This event is free, but registration is required.

Spring Physics Colloquium Series – Jeffrey Olafsen, Ph.D., associate professor of physics, will lecture on “ITS: The First 50 Years and Before” at 4 p.m. in Room E125 of Baylor Sciences Building, 101 Bagby Ave. Click here for more information.

Jazz Ambassadors Concert – The Jazz Ambassadors, America’s Big Band, the official touring big band of the United States Army, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Concert Hall in Glennis McCrary Music Building, 110 Baylor Ave. Tickets are available for free in the lobby of Glennis McCrary Music Building during normal business hours.

THURSDAY, April 6
Latin American Film Series – The history department will host a showing of the 2012 Latin American drama/adventure “Colegas” at 7 p.m. in Room 202 of Tidwell Bible Building, 600 Speight Ave. The film is in Portuguese and will have English subtitles. This event is free and open to the public.

Science Thursdays at the Mayborn – Melanie Sekeres, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience, will deliver a lecture titled “What do you remember?” at 7 p.m. at the Mayborn Museum Complex, 1300 S. University Parks Drive. Sekeres will discuss how memories are formed in the brain and what happens when there is damage to brain regions responsible for these processes. This lecture is part of Science Thursdays at the Mayborn, a series of hour-long talks sponsored by the Department of Physics. This lecture is free and open to the public but does not include museum admission.

FRIDAY, April 7
Biology Research Seminar – Raquel Sitcheran, Ph.D., assistant professor in the department of molecular and cellular medicine at Texas A&M University Health Science Center, will lecture on “NF-KB in Regulating Cancer Motility and Invasion” at 2:30 p.m. in Room D109 of Baylor Sciences Building, 101 Bagby Ave.

Sharon Bischofshausen Lecture – Larissa Niec, Ph.D., psychology professor at Central Michigan University, will deliver the 2017 Sharon Bischofshausen Lecture on parent-child interaction therapy at 2:30 p.m. in Room 301 of Marrs McLean Science Building, 1214 S. Fourth St.

CASPER Seminar Series – Chong Sun, doctoral candidate in the department of mathematics at Baylor University, will lecture on “Stable Computations for Solving Black-Scholes Model Equations with Cross Derivative Terms via Matrix Exponential Approximations” for the Center for Astrophysics, Space Physics & Engineering Research (CASPER) Seminar Series at 2:30 p.m. in Room 3160 of the Baylor Research and Innovation Collaborative (BRIC), 100 Research Parkway.

Baylor Opera Theater – The Baylor Opera Theater will perform a concert version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s 1878 comic opera HMS Pinafore at 7:30 p.m. at the Waco Hippodrome, 724 Austin Ave. in Waco. For ticket information, call 254-227-6723.

SATURDAY, April 8
Steppin’ Out Day of Service – More than 2,000 Baylor students will volunteer in the greater Waco community for this traditional day of service. Once each semester, Steppin’ Out enhances student involvement in the community, coordinates volunteer service and provides opportunities for experiential learning, civic leadership and social responsibility. Healthy Soul Food Cooking Demonstration and Health Fair – The Office of Community Engagement & Service at Baylor University, Waco-McLennan County Public Health District and Waco Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. are teaming up to sponsor the Healthy Soul Food Cooking Demonstration and Health Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at the Waco Multipurpose Center, 1020 Elm Avenue in the historic African-American center of Waco.
