Baylor Law School Offers Free, ‘User-Friendly’ Law Courses in People’s Law School 2017

WACO, Texas (Feb. 8, 2017) – This Saturday, the Baylor Law School will host the People’s Law School, a half-day event offering free courses designed to help the average citizen understand their legal rights.

The twelfth annual People’s Law School will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Baylor Law School, 1114 University Parks Drive.

“It is a community event meant to make the law user-friendly,” said Baylor Law School Professor Patricia Wilson, event organizer. “We offer the courses that we think people will be interested in to increase their knowledge of things they’d like to have a better understanding of for practical purposes and their own edification.”

Volunteer attorneys and legal experts will offer courses on a vast array of topics, from consumer law to employment law. Each course is one hour. Twenty courses are available, and People’s Law School attendees can register for any three courses.

Some of the courses offered include:

• Computer Scams and Other Risks of the Internet
• Deadly Force
• Veterans’ Rights
• Taxes for Small Businesses and Self-Employed Individuals

The People’s Law School also features courses designed around current political and social issues. In light of the new presidency, one of the new courses this year, “The Legislative Process: Statutes, Rules, Executive Orders,” will explore the president’s power and explain the difference between statutes, administrative rules and executive orders.

“Every year, we look at what’s going on in terms of current events and try to gauge what people would be interested in,” Wilson said.

The People’s Law School also has brought back an old course on the Affordable Care Act.

“We’d done the Affordable Care Act when it first became effective,” Wilson said. “Then we took a few years off because it seemed to be in equilibrium. Now, of course, with the talk of the repeal of Obamacare, we thought it would be a good time to bring the course back.”
