March 21, 1997

Local author Joe Robert will present a copy of his recently published book, Beyond the Flames, and research materials regarding the Branch Davidian stand-off to the Texas Collection at 3 p.m. today, March 21, at the Texas Collection in Carroll Library on the Baylor campus.
Beyond the Flames contains an extensive history of the Branch Davidian movement and Robert relied on materials from the Texas Collection for his research. He additionally included two photos from the Texas Collection archives of the old Mount Carmel compound, presently Vanguard Preparatory School.
"There is not a lot of information about the Davidians from about 1935 to the 1960s. The Texas Collection materials were very helpful in filling in the gaps," he said.
Robert includes extensive eye-witness accounts of the Branch Davidian stand-off in his book. He said that he tried to pull the focus away from David Koresh and tell the story of the people who were in the compound and the federal agents who took part in the raid.
Robert became interested in the Branch Davidians when he served as a volunteer for the Salvation Army during the stand-off. He said he spoke extensively with ATF and FBI agents who were in Waco during that time.
