WACO, Texas (April 28, 2015) – In honor of the 10th Annual lecture presented by Baylor University’s undergraduate scholarly publication “The Pulse,” senior Anna McKay will discuss her paper, “Middle Earth According to Farrer: Double Agency in Ainulindale” from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in Alexander Hall.
“’The Pulse’ lecture is a great event because it not only allows the speaker to present but it also represents the journal as a whole,” said Jeff Hunt, Ph.D., lecturer in Baylor’s department of classics, and the faculty advisor for “The Pulse.” “It’s really a great time for introducing students to scholarly life and how to put their ideas out in public and defend them without being graded on them.”
McKay was selected to be this year’s speaker after her essay received the 2015 Wallace Daniel Award by Baylor’s Phi Beta Kappa liberal arts honor society. The society is responsible for reviewing submitted academic papers from that year and thereby choosing the winner to be presented at the lecture.
McKay’s essay will propose interpretations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings by his contemporary author and theologian, Austin Farrer. Her thesis looks at particular motifs and argues for theological themes through the lens of Farrer.
“The Pulse” exclusively publishes student research with the goal of promoting and developing student work in a professional environment. The journal is staffed exclusively by students who take on the responsibilities of providing content, contacting sources, editing, publishing and publicity.
“I believe ‘The Pulse’ prepares students for life in all aspects as human beings, academically and professionally,” Hunt said.
The annual lecture is hosted by Baylor’s Honors College and is free and open to the public.
The event will take place inside Alexander Reading Room in Alexander Hall at 1413 S. Seventh St.
