WACO, Texas (Feb. 26, 2015) — Let the games begin.
Baylor University's entrepreneurship program is preparing to host its Fourth Annual Baylor New Venture Competition Friday, Feb. 27 to Saturday, Feb. 28.
“This year, we’re offering one of the biggest prize packages since the creation of the competition,” said Wes Nemec, program manager at Baylor University’s John F. Baugh Center for Entrepreneurship in the Hankamer School of Business.
The Baylor New Venture competition is a two-day, multi-staged business competition. Teams must come with original business plan proposals that will be critiqued in either a full — or speed — pitch competition. The featured categories of companies for this year’s competition are consumer and Internet technology companies and non-technology.
“Each applicant gets feedback on ideas. We hit them at every single stage of the competition with feedback, advice, critiquing, coaching and mentorship,” Nemec said.
This year’s competition will include 12 finalist teams from the University of Utah, Baruch College, University of Oklahoma, University of Pennsylvania, University of Arkansas, Oklahoma State University, University of Virginia, Texas Christian University, University of Houston and University of Maryland.
According to Nemec, the competition originally was formed to provide an opportunity for Baylor students, but went national once the entrepreneurial program saw its success.
“Baylor wanted an outlet for students to be able to advance their entrepreneurial ideas outside of the classroom,” Nemec said. “The heart of the competition is the educational aspect.”
The semifinal round will take place the morning of Saturday, Feb. 28, when the 12 finalist teams present in front of the judges panel. The chosen five finalist teams then will move on to present in the final round of the competition for the grand prize later that afternoon.
The final round of the competition will take place at 1 p.m. in Kayser Auditorium inside the Hankamer School of Business and is free and open to the public.
The Hankamer School of Business is located at 1428 S. Fifth St. in Waco.
