Baptist Student Ministries to Sponsor Hunger Awareness Week

February 5, 1997

Baylor University's Baptist Student Ministries will sponsor Hunger Awareness Week Feb. 10-14 in an effort to make students aware of local and world-wide hunger needs.
Baptist Student Ministries wants to provide students with ways they can make a difference in the hunger problem both locally and internationally, according to Rae Wright, associate director of BSM.
Several activities will take place throughout the week to educate and inform students about hunger.
Bill Gravell of Compassion International will speak about world-wide hunger needs at the "Hunger Dinner" at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 10, in the Bobo Baptist Student Center. The dinner is open to the public and a $2 donation will be taken at the door for use in supporting three local organizations: Meals on Wheels, Compassion Ministry and The World Hunger Farm.
On Tuesday, a faculty panel will meet at 3:30 p.m. in the BSU to discuss hunger issues. At
4 p.m. there will be a 5K run. The entry fee is $3 and winners receive a hunger awareness T-shirt.
On Wednesday, Tilly Burgin, director of Mission Arlington, will speak on hunger at 10:00 a.m. in Chapel-Forum. At 3:30 p.m. in the BSC, Katy Cook, editor of Seeds magazine, will lead a seminar on how to use public relations and journalism skills to fight hunger. From 4-6 p.m. the Catholic Student Center will sponsor a work day at The World Hunger Relief Farm. At 7 p.m., Jimmy Dorrell from Mission Waco will speak about domestic hunger.
On Thursday, a 30-hour fast will take place. Money saved from meals not eaten during the 30-hour period will be donated to the hungry in Waco. There will be meetings at the BSU during meal times (8 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 6 p.m.). From 8-9 p.m. students will read poetry and speak during open mike time at Common Grounds.
"The World Vision Famine does two things," Wright said. "First, it is a fund-raiser and second, it gives students an idea of how it feels to be hungry."
On Friday, the love loaves will be picked up from the dorms.
Hunger Awareness Week is coordinated by a steering committee of six students.
