Baylor to Welcome More than 100 Law Schools to Campus for Law School Fair

WACO, Texas (Oct. 16, 2014) – Representatives from more than 100 accredited law schools will visit the Baylor University campus on Oct. 23 to meet face-to-face with the university’s pre-law students.

This Law School Fair, sponsored by the Southwest Association of PreLaw Advisors, will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, on the fifth floor of the Cashion Academic Center. The fair gives students the chance to interact with law school administrators, ask questions and learn more about the opportunities associated with a law degree.

“It is an opportunity to introduce Baylor students to law schools from around the country and, just as important, an opportunity to introduce law schools around the country to Baylor’s exceptionally talented pre-law students,” said Elizabeth Cano, J.D., coordinator of Baylor’s pre-law program.

Schools scheduled to be on hand include Baylor Law School, Arizona State University-Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, Notre Dame Law School, Pepperdine University Law School, Vanderbilt Law School, and dozens more. (Full list of law schools at the 2014 Law School Fair.)

The fair is free and open to the public. Cano said she hopes to see everyone from freshmen to alumni take advantage of the event.

For freshmen and sophomores, the fair provides a chance to begin learning more about law school and explore some of the many available options for legal education, she said. For juniors, talking with school representatives and gaining in-depth knowledge is a critical step in deciding where they will apply.

“Seniors and alumni should treat this as an opportunity to meet face-to-face with individuals who may be reviewing their law school applications,” Cano said. “There is generally no interview as part of the law school application process. These interactions can, and do, make a difference when it comes to admissions.”

Cano offered the following tips for students to prepare for the fair:

Generate a list of both basic and specific questions that you want to ask the law school representatives.

“If there is a school attending that you are particularly interested in, you should do some basic research before the Fair so you can ask questions about specific programs the school offers. However, you should also have a list of basic questions that you can ask schools you know less about; this is an opportunity to explore dozens of law schools all under one roof.”

Be prepared to discuss your own interests, and make a good first impression.

“This is not an interview, but do remember that the impression you make counts. All representatives are instructed to take notes on memorable student interactions, either good or bad. Introduce yourself to the representative, giving your name, your major, your class year and your hometown.”

Follow up with the people you meet.

“If you make a good connection with a law school representative, get a copy of his or her business card and follow up after the fair.”
