Two Baylor Professors of Nutrition Sciences Receive Recognition from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

WACO, Texas (Oct. 15, 2014) — The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, recently recognized two Baylor University faculty members as Fellows of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Named as Fellows were Suzy Weems, Ph.D., R.D., C.S.S.D., L.D., professor of nutrition sciences in the department of family and consumer sciences in Baylor’s College of Health and Human Sciences; and Janelle Walter, Ph.D., R.D., C.F.C.S., also professor of nutrition sciences in the department of family and consumer sciences.
The designation recognizes the professors’ commitment to the field of dietetics and celebrates their professional accomplishments and pursuit of lifelong learning. Being named a Fellow signifies that a member has lived up to the Academy’s values of customer focus, integrity, innovation and social responsibility.
Weems has professional experience in wellness, weight management, diabetes care, eating disorders, cardiovascular health and sports dietetics. Her experience in sports nutrition has been with athletes at the pediatric level to those at NCAA Division I premiere teams to improve player performance. Weems also is a consulting dietitian for hospitals and extended-care facilities across Texas in various geographical, cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic areas.
She earned a bachelor's degree from Baylor and a master's and Ph.D. in nutrition from Texas Tech University. She is registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration on a national level as well as licensed as a dietician in Texas. She holds a board certification as a specialist in sports dietetics and has served as chair of the American Dietetic Association's legislative and public policy committee. She is past president of the Texas Dietetic Association and received a Distinguished Alumna award from Texas Tech University’s College of Human Sciences.
Walter has been recognized by the Association of Family and Consumer Sciences as a national Leader, by the American Heart Association as an outstanding regional volunteer, by the Theta Kappa chapter of Chi Omega as an outstanding female faculty member and by the Alpha Theta Phi chapter of Delta Delta Delta as an outstanding faculty member. She has written 28 refereed publications and has taught at Baylor for 35 years. She has been a Registered Dietitian since 1984. She is a former president of Texas Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. Walter earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Houston and her Ph.D. in home economics education from Iowa State University.
