Physical Education Prof to Be Honored in Corpus Christi Dec. 6

The Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (TAHPERD) will honor Dr. Norman L. "Buddy" Gilchrest, professor health, human performance and recreation at Baylor University, with the highest award bestowed by TAHPERD at its 73rd annual convention Friday, Dec. 6, in Room 222 of the Corpus Christi Bayfront Convention Center.
Gilchrest will receive the David K. Brace Award in recognition of his outstanding service and teaching. According to Quentin A. Christian, executive director of TAHPERD, "For Buddy Gilchrest, this is an honor well deserved, for he has made important contributions to our professions for many years."
Gilchrest joined the Baylor faculty in 1969. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees and doctorate in education from Baylor.
He has received Baylor's "Outstanding Tenured Professor Award," the "Outstanding Achievement Award" from the American Association for Leisure and Recreation, and the "Honor Fellow Award" from the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in Indianapolis, Ind.
Gilchrest has served as president of TAHPERD, president of the American Association for Leisure and Recreation, president of the Texas Outdoor Recreation Association, and on a number of committees for TAHPERD including the Outdoor Recreation Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee, the Nominating Committee and Executive Directors Selection Procedure Committee.
He specializes in adventure activities, outdoor education and sports psychology.
