WACO, Texas (Feb. 28, 2014) – With the countless genres of modern music available to listeners today, music of the Renaissance era can easily become buried under current top hits. There are some groups who aim to keep that music alive, however, and the Baylor School of Music will welcome world-renowned Piffaro, The Renaissance Band at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 3, in Roxy Grove Hall.
Piffaro is known for creating the rustic music of the peasantry, as well as the professional wind bans of the late Medieval and Renaissance periods. Its seven members play reconstructed period instruments including the shawms, dulcians, sackbuts, recorders, krumhorns, bagpipes, lutes, guitars, harps and a variety of percussion instruments.
The group, founded in 1980, has entertained audiences throughout the world in Europe, Canada and South America. They have been active in the field of education since their founding and have been honored twice for their work by Early Music America, an organization who serves to strengthen the early music community in North America. Piffaro has received the “Early Music Brings History Alive” award in 2003 and the Laurette Goldberg “Lifetime Achievement Award in Early Music Outreach” in 2011.
The group has released 18 recordings since 1992 and has collaborated with renowned artists including the Belgian vocal group Capilla Flamenca and the Philadelphia Chamber Choir.
Roxy Grove Hall is at 624 Speight St. For more information, call the Baylor School of Music at (254) 710-3571.
