WACO, Texas (Feb. 28, 2014) – The Baylor department of history will welcome Katherine French, Ph.D., the J. Frederick Hoffman Professor of Medieval English History at the University of Michigan, at 3:30 p.m. Monday, March 3, in Morrison Hall, Room 100.
French will present a lecture titled, “Church-keeping and Housekeeping: The Spaces of Women’s Piety in Late Medieval London.”
Jeffrey Hamilton, Ph.D., professor and chair of the history department, said it is important to celebrate the contributions of women to society and history.
“Women continue to be an underrepresented group in the traditional account of history,” he said. “They have made much greater contributions than have been noted.”
French was invited to speak on the topic because of her interest and research on late medieval and early modern women’s history, Hamilton said.
French received her undergraduate degree from Carleton College in 1984 and her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1993. She has published books titled “The People of the Parish: Community Identity in a Late Medieval English Diocese,” “The Good Women of the Parish: Gender and Religion after the Black Death” and “Women and Gender in the Western Past.”
She is working on a book that will examine the material culture of late medieval London households and what impact the post-plague rise in consumption had on household dynamics and gendered behavior.
Morrison Hall is at 1410 S. Fifth St. For more information, call the Baylor department of history at (254) 710-2667.
