John F. Baugh Center for Entrepreneurship and Free Enterprise Welcomes Author Os Guinness

WACO, Texas (Feb. 10, 2014) -Baylor University's John F. Baugh Center for Entrepreneurship and Free Enterprise will welcome renowned author and social critic Os Guinness at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12 in Kayser Auditorium. Guinness will speak about his most recent book, "A Free People's Suicide: Sustainable Freedom and the American Future."
Steve Bradley, Ph.D., director of the Free Enterprise program of the Baugh Center, said Guinness will present stimulating ideas in his lecture.
"We are interested in his ideas about the connection between freedom, virtue and faith," Bradley said. "He believes that everyone wants freedom and virtues and his argument is that they are all interconnected."
Bradley said the Free Enterprise program typically focuses on business and entrepreneurship, but Guinness' ideas are worth hearing.
"The general topic of this book is freedom," he said. "His notion that the faith and virtue components are key requirements is something we wanted to bring to the table."
The lecture will also challenge a common public opinion about faith.
"People think that by throwing off the shackles of faith we will be freer, but it's important for us to realize that a country void of virtues and faith in the public square will have more limited freedoms," Bradley said.
Guinness was most recently on the Baylor campus for an "On Topic" discussion with Baylor President and Chancellor Ken Starr. Guinness completed his undergraduate degree at the University of London and his doctorate in the social sciences from Oriel College, Oxford. He has written or edited thirty books on a wide range of themes including "The American Hour," "Time for Truth," "The Call," "Invitation to the Classics," "Long Journey Home," "Unspeakable," and "A Case for Civility."
The Baugh Center for Entrepreneurship & Free Enterprise seeks to aid in the preservation of the competitive free enterprise system, including the vital small business sector of the economy. It also promotes entrepreneurial activity among individuals and organizations that stimulate economic development through the formation of new business ventures.
